NORA

It feels like crossing the airstrip takes forever, even though she’s sprinting at full speed.

For every step, she fears hearing someone shout for her. Or worse, a gun going off.

But that doesn’t happen.

Reaching the building, she almost slams against the wall. Stepping around the corner, she collapses to her hands and knees and heaves for breath. As she’s finally able to breathe regularly again, she gets up and glances back towards the jeep. It’s still just sitting there. No one is coming out. No lights have been turned on.

I made it. They didn’t see me.

She slinks around the building, going for the door, when—

She stops abruptly and jumps back. One more step, and she would have tripped over a fat guy sitting on the ground, back leaning against the wall, mouth open, snoring away. Across his lap is a rifle, and on the ground next to him is a flashlight and a large, steel thermos bottle.

Nora doesn’t dare breathe, so she holds it in as she steps around the guy. He seems to be sound asleep, but she can’t take any chances. Turning the knob, she finds the door locked. She taps it gently, keeping a close eye on the guard. If he opens his eyes, she’ll go for his rifle.

“Yes?” Steffie’s voice from the other side, very low.

“It’s me,” Nora whispers.

The door is immediately unlocked and opened. Nora steps in, and Steffie shuts and locks the door after her. Turning around, the girl looks at her with big, scared eyes. “He was here earlier. The Prophet. He knows something is up.”

Nora nods. “I could tell from the guards.”

“He said they might be coming for Danny,” Steffie goes on, going to the bed. “That I had to be extra watchful. And that if I saw or heard anything, I was to scream out as loud as I could.” She gently wraps Danny in another blanket as she keeps talking. “You really need to go right now. If he comes back and sees you here, he’ll kill both of us.” She picks up Danny. “Please, just take him and go.”

“All right,” Nora says. “Let me just check.” She quickly pulls out the package from the back of her pants and puts it on the bed. A sudden impulse makes her cover it with the blanket.

Then, she strides to the narrow window facing south. The airstrip is open and empty under the pale moonlight. The pines are visible in the distance. It’ll be a long run. Ten times as long as the one she just did. And she’ll once again be completely exposed the entire way. Plus, she’ll be running with the baby in her arms.

“Please, Nora,” Steffie says, sounding like she’s about to cry. “He might come back any moment.”

Nora goes to take the baby. In order to do so, she steps around the bed. And that’s when she hears the doorknob rattle. The lock snaps open.

Steffie gasps and spins around. Nora looks towards the door, seeing it start to open, and then she ducks down behind the bed.
